The 2 part interview Ebuka had with Toolz, about the hugely popular BB Naija show.

Highlights to guide:

One of the reasons BBNigeria turned out to be the biggest season ever was because it aired on GOTV, so there was a whole new demographic.

The season was also heavily censored as  a lot of things, including sexual acts and nudity, was not broadcast because it wasn’t Nigerian culture friendly.

Ebuka hinted that there might have been a few instances of ‘self-pleasing’ which was not aired or hinted at…

On the first live episode, he was a case of nerves but by the 3rd episode, he had settled in and was just having fun.

At the start of the show, there was no money and people didn’t really have faith in it so they didn’t drop money and the kind of money that was released was not the kind that could have made the show, happen in Nigeria.

South Africa already had a house and a control room and Big Brother Africa (6 seasons), Big Brother South Africa (3 seasons), Big Brother Brother Angola (2 seasons) held there so all they had to do was move in as opposed to building an entirely new house in Nigeria, when there was no money

The Big Brother Nigeria house in 2006 was in ikeja, which was somebody’s house that they rented and converted into a studio.

Close to 400 people worked on the show.

Ebuka doesn’t know that there is second season but based on logistics, there should be another season.

On day 1, the show started with 3 sponsors but by the end of the show, they had about 13 sponsors. One brand even came on in the final week because of how popular the show got.

Re; the incident where his bulge was  visible, this is how he explained it: after every show, he turns on his phone and goes to his wife’s WhatsApp for feedback on the show and her message to him, then, was for him to go to social media and read comments and he thought that was quite strange since she had not done that before. Through out the 2 hours of the show, nobody saw the bulge. Not the producer, director or make-up artiste who came to touch him up during commercial breaks.  Not even the studio audience so he blames it on lighting. It wasn’t intentional.

TTT auditioned for Big Brother Nigeria in 2006.

Ese, Jon were his favourite housemates.

Efe had never seen a Big Brother show before…

The housemates were a mix of personalities. People wondered why Ese didn’t get into the house but Ese and Bisola have similar personality traits so the organizers may have dropped Ese because they wanted a mix of personalities and not a concentration of certain traits.

Ebuka was bothered by TTT’s denial of his family.

Big Brother Nigeria is not a talent show. It is a reality show. So the talk about some housemates having talents or not was kind of misplaced.

T Boss was not liked by the housemates because she is a germaphobe so she always complained of untidy acts by the housemates and since the housemates were adults, it might have been difficult to police them. On why a lot of Nigerians don’t like her, Nigerians feed off of the energy of the housemates. So if housemates do not like her, viewers won’t. Also because she has a huge background in Romania and is well traveled, people couldn’t find her relatable because her reality is very different from that of a lot of Nigerians.

At the start of the show, T Boss wasn’t getting that many votes. It was around the 7th week, when the gang up on her started, that the sympathy votes skyrocketed her profile.

The viewers saw one angle of the Kemen situation but the organizers saw different angles and deliberated for 7 hours over whether to disqualify him or not.

PART 2:

On why Kemen is still attending shows being hosted for other Big Brother Nigeria housemates, Ebuka says the show has ended  and the contract of the organizers with the contestants have ended so they may not be able to compel him to not attend these shows.

Uriel’s diary session was fun, for Ebuka, and lasted for about 10 to 15 minutes and she would tell Big Brother a lot of things that would happen in the house.

Ebuka also liked Coco-Ice because she was her own person and didn’t try to fit in and even stood up to people other  people couldn’t stand up to. She also had no problems hanging out with herself.

He loves Bisola but he wanted T Boss to be second because Nigerians would have lost their minds. It would have been great content.

He believes Bally was a strategic player.

He got called back for Big Brother All Stars in 2010 but he turned it down and they turned to Uti.

Bisola is unbelievably talented and he also believes Bassey would be a great presenter.

The highlight of the show, for him, was his outfits. He always looked forward to what Mai Atafo and Vodi would come up with, every week.

He enjoyed watching the fights between the housemates because those were moments when they were not playing for the cameras.

There is no template for winning Big Brother. Anyone can win.

The best strategy to get picked for BBN is there is no strategy and there are 7 or 8 stages in the audition and they always look out for personalities so be yourself. In the house, the diary room sessions is where the strategy is. Be yourself and nominate strong personalities. Also, the things you say in the diary room goes a long way.

If T Boss was not in the show in the final weeks, the finale wouldn’t have been that interesting or entertaining.
