Mentally Aware Nigeria Initiative (MANI) was started in 2015 by Dr Victor Ugo to eradicate the high level of ignorance, neglect and mis-education about mental health in Nigeria.
The organization promotes mental health as a critical part of overall wellness through its various campaigns, focused on creating awareness on mental health, and the provision of support for early identification and intervention. They also encourage people to seek help as soon as it is needed, and serve as liaison between young people and the mental health community. They are focused on removing the stigma that surrounds mental health issues, and creating a comfortable environment for an open conversation about mental health issues.
MANI offers counseling services, psycho-educational services like workshops, seminars as well as corporate trainings for workplace stress and depression
Some of their projects/initiatives: –#52ChampionsOfHope is a documentary series where young people of both sexes who have:
1. had suicidal thoughts or attempted suicide
2. have been diagnosed with a mental illness or
3. live with someone that is mentally ill all courageously tell their stories with the hope that by doing so and bravely showing their faces and sharing their names, they will inspire others to do same.
Another one of their initiatives is the #365PersonalitiesOfHope campaign where they post the quotes of a celebrity or public figure speaking about mental health in Nigeria or offering some hope giving words to those that might be mentally ill while encouraging them to speak up and seek help.
